Boston Consulting Group’s research confirms what we’ve observed building BrandSight™: measuring who comes to mind first is far more predictive than traditional awareness metrics.

Key insights from BCG’s research

  • Superior predictive power. First Fast Response (FFR) is 2–3× more predictive of purchase than unaided awareness and 3–7× more predictive than aided awareness across categories.
  • Super Bowl validation. In Super Bowl advertising testing, FFR predicted 53% of subsequent purchase versus 14% for unaided awareness, a 3.8× improvement.
  • Job-to-be-done context. FFR measures who comes to mind first in specific demand spaces, capturing the moment of need rather than abstract awareness.

How this aligns with BrandSight™

We’ve built the same principles into our methodology: context-specific measurement of associations within usage contexts and decision moments; research designs that prioritize spontaneous, first-response associations; and consistent validation that context-specific salience correlates with market performance better than traditional tracking metrics.

Practical applications

  1. Shift from general to specific. Replace “brand awareness” with job-specific prompts: “When you need [specific solution], which brands come to mind first?”
  2. Measure speed of response. The first brand mentioned carries more predictive weight than a comprehensive list.
  3. Context matters. Different jobs-to-be-done surface different brand hierarchies. Measure across your key demand spaces.
  4. Validate with behavior. Connect FFR metrics to actual purchase data in your category.

This research validates the shift toward behavioral prediction over traditional brand tracking, exactly what BrandSight™ implements. See also Byron Sharp’s How Brands Grow on mental availability, the LinkedIn B2B Institute’s work on Category Entry Points, and our own Brand Density research.
