When Emotions Run High: Where Do AI Brands "Live" Emotionally?

What millions of spoken conversations reveal about OpenAI, xAI / Grok, and the future of AI brand choice.

Most AI tools don’t have an awareness problem anymore. People know the big names, they’ve tried the tools, and they talk about them constantly.

What they don’t have yet is clear emotional territory.

Do people talk about your brand with warm curiosity? Deep trust? Low-level anxiety? Irritated “this is in my way” frustration?

Together with All Ears, we turned millions of spoken conversations about AI tools into an emotional map of the category, and a new way to track where brands actually live in people’s minds.

Four emotional “homes” for AI brands

Under the hood, our framework builds on the PAD model from emotion science: Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance. For brand strategy, we collapse this into the two dimensions that matter most for behavior:

  • Valence. Is the emotion positive or negative?
  • Agency. Does the person feel in control, or like things are happening to them?

That gives four clear emotional homes:

  1. Warm Curiosity (positive × low agency): “I’m exploring this. It seems useful, I’m learning what’s possible.”
  2. Evangelism / Trust (positive × high agency): “This gives me superpowers. I rely on it; it’s my default.”
  3. Anxious Caution (negative × low agency): “This feels risky or overwhelming. I’m not sure I can trust it.”
  4. Irritated Control (negative × high agency): “I know what I’m doing; this tool is in my way.”

Every brand mention with a clear emotional signal maps onto this 2×2; neutral or low-intensity reactions are set aside so we can see where the real emotional energy sits.

What spoken social reveals about AI tools today

  • Most AI brands still live in Warm Curiosity. People are exploring and testing: positive, but low-stakes.
  • OpenAI is the clearest example of Warm Curiosity: genuine interest, experimentation, skill-building.
  • xAI / Grok triggers more high-intensity concern, leaning into Anxious Caution: strong emotion full of questions and worries.
  • True Evangelism and deep distrust are still rare across the category.

The takeaway: in today’s AI landscape, emotional intensity matters more than awareness. The brands that shape strong, distinctive, high-agency emotions will shape future preference.

Why high-agency emotion beats awareness

Decades of research show emotions drive what we actually do. Positive valence is strongly associated with what people choose; high agency, feeling confident and in control, is closely tied to real preference and follow-through, especially when measured in voice.

  • High-agency positive emotion (Evangelism / Trust) → advocacy, default-choice behavior, “I can’t work without this.”
  • High-agency negative emotion (Irritated Control) → the tool matters, but loyalty is fragile: switching, public complaints, sharp criticism.

Brands stuck in Warm Curiosity may be widely known and lightly used, but they don’t yet own the habits that drive long-term equity.

People don’t just post. They think out loud.

Most social listening is built on typed text. But when people speak, they think out loud: they ramble, hesitate, get excited, vent. You hear where they feel in control, the frictions that drive irritation, and the recurring “this is magic” moments that create evangelism. That’s why this project focuses on spoken social: podcasts, live streams, spoken posts, the world’s largest ongoing focus group.

How we turned spoken social into an emotional brand map

  1. Collect long-form, real-world mentions in natural language.
  2. Detect emotion and sentiment into fine-grained clusters (“Joy & Delight,” “Anxiety & Worry,” “UX Frustration,” “Empowerment & Agency”).
  3. Estimate agency from emotion-cluster baselines, language cues, and channel context.
  4. Map each strong mention into one of the four quadrants.
  5. Aggregate to brand level to see where each brand’s emotional energy concentrates.

The result is a living emotional map of the category that updates as conversations shift.

What this lets brand & insights leaders do

  • Pinpoint where your brand lives emotionally, versus competitors.
  • Spot friction before it shows up in churn: rising Irritated Control is an early warning.
  • Grow Evangelism / Trust on purpose, by finding the use cases that create it.
  • Track brand strength in real time, beyond top-of-mind awareness.
  • See the narratives and tensions underneath the scores.

From curiosity to indispensability

Most AI brands are still in “trying this out” mode in people’s minds. The opportunity, and the risk, lies in what happens next: move your footprint from Warm Curiosity into Evangelism / Trust, systematically reduce the sources of Irritated Control for power users, and build the durable equity that wins default status.
